When every option feels like "picking your poison," people often choose something just to move forward, or avoid deciding altogether and feel stuck.
But in decision making, the options you see are shaped by how the decision is being approached. When you change the approach, different options become visible.
It enables you to rigorously define what you actually need from the decision and evaluate your existing options against those requirements.
Applying the ORS™ reveals why your current options are falling short, and turns those gaps into new options you didn't realize you had.
DO ALL OF YOUR OPTIONS FEEL LIKE COMPROMISES?
The ORS™ Decision Opportunity Scan reveals the gaps in your current decision-making approach.
15 minutes. 5 key questions. Clarity on how your current approach is shaping the options you can see and where you need to shift to identify new options.
FORGET PROS AND CONS. Elevate Your Perspective.
Many traditional decision-making approaches rely on comparing available options — balancing pros and cons, weighing trade-offs, and choosing the least problematic path forward.
The Operational Reality Standard™ (ORS™) takes a different approach.
Instead of comparing options against each other, you use what you observe in your existing options — what works, what doesn’t, and more — to define a clear set of requirements an option must meet in order to succeed (the decision’s necessary conditions).
Once those necessary conditions are defined, your existing options can be evaluated more precisely, making it clear where they fall short and what is still missing.
Those gaps are then used to surface new options that you didn’t even realize existed.
The Operational Reality Standard™ is named for its focus on evaluating how options will function once implemented.
NOT COACHING. NOT CONSULTING.
The ORS™ is structured system for defining decision requirements and revealing options not currently visible.
The ORS™ reveals why your current options feel limiting, and helps surface better-fit alternatives.
✔️ A structured, comprehensive system for decision making
✔️ Evaluates existing options against those conditions with precision and consistency
✔️ Defines necessary conditions — clear pass/fail requirements for options
✔️Uses the gaps between necessary conditions and current options to reveal previously hidden options
❌ NOT Coaching
❌NOT a productivity or management system
❌ NOT Consulting
❌ NOT a method for outsourcing decision-making
The ORS™ is most valuable for professional or personal high-stakes decisions where getting the outcome right matters and you are ready to decide and move forward as quickly as possible.
Use it when a decision:
▪️Involves significant commitment of capital, time, or reputation
▪️Is Irreversible or expensive to undo
▪️Changes how your company or your life will function day-to-day
▪️Has lasting impact with consequences that extend 6 months or more
Once you understand how ORS™ defines necessary conditions, it can be applied to any decision.
The ORS™ is for you if:
▪️You’re facing a decision with options, but none of them feel like a confident “yes.”
▪️You’ve explored what’s available and still can’t see a clear path forward.
▪️You believe a better option exists — you just haven’t identified it yet.
▪️You want to make the decision yourself, not outsource it to someone else.
▪️You want precision and clarity, not general guidance or advice.
▪️You are ready to take action and move forward.
The ORS™ is NOT for you if:
▪️You want someone to make the decision for you.
▪️You’re comfortable choosing an option that doesn’t fully meet your requirements.
▪️You don’t believe better options exist.
▪️You are looking for a system to manage execution rather than improve the decision-making process.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about the Operational Reality Standard™.
Who is behind the ORS™ and why did they create it?
The Operational Reality Standard™ was created by Dr. Ada Y. Barlatt, PhD, PEng, a systems and mindset engineer with nearly 20 years of experience in research, teaching, and consulting.
Dr. Ada's background is in engineering, focused on how systems actually function in practice. She later developed Mindset Engineering™, an approach that uses rigorous thinking to help people shift the invisible constraints keeping them stuck.
The ORS™ is an application of her Mindset Engineering framework. Dr. Ada noticed that the people she worked with felt most stuck when making decisions — specifically, when their options all felt wrong. The problem wasn't that good options didn't exist; it was that their approach to the decision itself was limiting what they could see.
The ORS™ was built to solve exactly that: a structured way to define the necessary conditions that a satisfactory option must meet, and a method for evaluating and revealing options that meet those conditions.
Is the ORS™ AI-powered?
No. The ORS™ is applied by a human, not software. You work with it through structured 1:1 virtual or in-person sessions.
Is the ORS™ coaching?
No. Coaching focuses on internal exploration — self-discovery, mindset shifts, unlocking potential from within. The ORS™ focuses on definition and verification — what specifically an option must have in order to be acceptable and whether your options actually meet the conditions you've defined. If you want to go on a journey, please hire a coach. If you want to identify options that meet your requirements so you can make a decision, use the ORS™.
Is the ORS™ consulting?
No. Consulting provides answers — someone analyzes your situation and tells you what to do. The ORS™ doesn't tell you what to do. It enables you to define the necessary conditions for your decision, evaluate your current options and identify options that meet those conditions. You do the thinking; the ORS™ provides the framework.
How does the ORS™ compare to EOS or other operating systems?
Most operating systems prescribe how your firm must be structured — their meetings, their roles, their hierarchy. The ORS™ doesn't prescribe anything. It evaluates whether your decisions align with your requirements. Other systems hand you a blueprint; the ORS™ gives you a measuring tool.
Can I use the ORS™ on more than one decision?
Yes. The ORS™ applies to any decision. You can use it whenever you're making a choice and feel stuck or unclear.
Can I use the ORS™ with my team?
Yes. The ORS™ provides a shared language and framework that helps teams evaluate decisions together with clarity and consistency. When everyone uses the same framework, misalignments surface earlier and conversations become more productive.
Can the ORS™ help my team make more strategic decisions?
Yes. When teams use the ORS™, you can set a single set of necessary conditions that are consistently used across all decisions. This means more consistency and decisions that are clearly linked to the organization’s strategy.
